Waome

Waome was a steamship build in 1912 near Gravenhurst. The first name she had oroginally was MINK, she was named later "Waome" after a refit in 1927. Waome was caught in a storm on October 6, 1934, and was lost near Keewaydin Island. The ship had a crew of five, the captain and one passenger. The ship sank in less than one minute, with the loss of one crew member and the minister. Apparently the captain died of a heart attack while swimming to shore after the ship went down.

Today, the wreck sits upright in 65 feet of water in very good shape. Because of the presence of tannic acid, the water is tea-coloured and the wreck site is very dark and dive lights are mandatory. The upper deck contains a few benches, the wheel house and lounge. The lower deck has a cargo area boiler room, engine room and dining room. The windows are gone (even parts of the walls were removed by fellow divers to make the wreck "a better place one for diving"). This allows many entry and exit points, but care must still be taken when exploring the interior of the wreck. This wreck is marked with buoys tided with lines at the bow and stern. Because the lake can be exceptionally calm these lines can become slack and easliy get entangled in a diver's gear

Directions: From Highway 400 proceed North to Hwy 69 North. Take Bracebridge (Hwy 118 West) exit. Turn left towards Bracebridge 4 km and turn left at end of road. Proceed 10 minutes and turn left at Milford Bay Road. At Stop sign turn right for 1 km then park on left in parking lot. Meet boat or launch boat. Apparently there are few "hand draw maps" pretty good to help you find the place.

Scuba 2000 has a map on how to get there.
Here is the link to it, many thanks Scuba 2000!!

Any comments and/or suggestions are much appreciated.
