Augustus
While returning from the lake on May 17th 2003, Wayne Gay and Tom Rutledge stumbled on this wreck. Built by the Calvin
Company in 1893 as a schooner she was cut down into a barge around 1918. Augustus, it previously sank due to old age at Kingston's
Portsmouth Harbour, and was raised only to be moved to a different area of the lake bottom to eliminate a hazard to navigation.
It appears the wreck was well stripped prior to sinking, so little remains aside from the hull. At nearly 40' wide this was
one of the wider wooden schooner barges of the time.
The opposite in design to a schooner scow (which has a flat bow and stern) this ship has a pointed stern as well as bow
which makes orienting on it something of a challenge, but it can be interesting to try to determine which end is which.
